Bat-Vember #23: Gotham By Gaslight

Description

The origins of DC's Elseworlds brand lay here, one of the best and the first to be considered as such. A story that largely interweaves Batman's origin (murdered parents, decade of training, return to Gotham) unchanged, but with the added twist that Bruce must now face off against Jack the Ripper, who has come to continue his Victorian reign of terror in Gotham City near the turn of the century. Its a crackling good one with a twist, and one that I'm surprised was never revisited more often as the opportunity was there for DC to craft their own Elseworlds version of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen with their own Victoria Era/Steampunk Justice League (seen several customs that would have proven this to be correct, as the imagined versions of Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Superman, and the Atom reflect the same Steampunk sensibility while also fitting in seamlessly with that universe).

The only figure made that reflect's Mignola's art style on Batman (Mignola worked on a few other Batman tales both before Hellboy and up to the present) I tried to capture a couple different things, the first was a Victorian era photo style with its yellowed muted colors. The second was to capture all the high-contrast inks and pencil works that the sculptors brought to the figure to make it reminiscent of the comic story. And the third was to make the figure looks big and impressive enough and human enough to fool the viewer (honestly I must say) into thinking otherwise.
